"Changes"

Two days ago my boss was 'let go.' The reason given was that we're making "changes" in the company. It's not really my business why he was let go, but "changes" is an obvious cover. The fact that the things that actually changed (or are changing) weren't enumerated is a little disconcerting. The question was asked "what about the rest of us?", and the reply was "we're not done."

Now, we were assured that a) this isn't an indicator of a problem with the company (which I believe), and b) there aren't a lot of layoffs planned...just (there's that word again) "changes."

I like what I'm doing. I really like it. I mean, for the last few days I've been working with my team to port a new bootloader onto our newest device and boot a kernel. It's awesome! But, there have been rumblings about splitting up the team. Of all the team members I would be the most likely to be shifted somewhere else (for reasons I won't go into). I would be very disappointed if that were to happen.

The timing of all this is interesting, because a little over a week ago my friend Dave called me about a position in the company where he works. It could easily be a 20% salary increase, but it's a little farther away and it's not exactly the low-level work I've been enjoying. I did my due diligence (temple/fast/prayer) and decided that I was happy at Control4, even with the lower salary.

But here's the thing: if I get put on another team, removed from what I really enjoy, then why not do the same work someplace else for 20% more money? And to be honest, it's not just the money. The environment over there seemed really cool, and I think they're doing really important work. If I went there I can honestly say it would be the first place I worked that I believed in. (It's a medical device company that's working on some really cool and potentially life-saving technology).

I dunno. We'll see how the next few weeks pan out. Even if the position with Dave is gone, I've always been blessed with ever better jobs and I see no reason why this time would be any different.
