I'm back
I got back from San Diego yesterday. The workshop couldn't have been better. I loved it! I learned a lot about perspective, viewpoint and developing deep stories. It was great. I've finally got some motivation to start on a book.
I learned a lot of things that I plan on using to go back and fix some of my short stories, and I have some ideas for some short stories in the future, but I'm ready to get to work on a larger project.
San Diego was great. The weather was in the 70s, there was a light breeze, and it was slightly overcast most of the time (which I like). I stayed at a hostel about 3 miles from the airport, so I just walked everywhere I needed to go. I got some blisters, but overall it was nice. I had everything I needed in one normal-sized backpack, so I was free to do whatever I wanted. Maybe I'll post more details later.
I was thinking the other day...somehow in a conversation the phrase "jack-of-all-trades, master of none" came up. I was explaining it to Moab and it occurred to me that I fit the description. I try to do a lot of things, mainly because I just like doing a lot of different things, but I don't approach being 'masterful' at any of them. I think maybe it's time to let some of the fringe things slide so that I can focus on one thing and get good at it.
I've always liked writing, and after this week I think that if there's something I want to be good at, 'being an author' is it.
Talk is cheap. So we'll see if anything actually changes...but I'm hopeful.
