With the rising cost of corn, I've wondered how long it would be until the price of high fructose corn syrup approached the cost of cane sugar. The only reason HFCS is used is because with the corn subsidies doled out by our benevolent government overlords, the price of corn is so insanely low that even with all the processing involved, HFCS is still cheaper than sugar. But with the new push for corn-based ethanol (what a stupid idea), the price is rising.

I bring this up because in the last week I've seen 3 things that indicated (to me, at least) that high fructose corn syrup is losing popularity.

The first think was some Danimals yogurt drinks that Jena picked up for the kids. Right on the box it said "contains no high fructose corn syrup". Awesome! Go to your grocery store and look through the yogurt section. You'll be surprised how few naturally sweetened options there are.

Next, we were walking through the store and I saw some Coke bottles in the "Mexican Food" section. A quick check...sweetened with cane sugar! So I grabbed one. It was a little flat, but it was still good (glass bottles are the only way to drink a cola).

Finally, we were out of barbeque sauce, so I grabbed a bottle of Bulls Eye. When I went to open it at home (to put on some delicious grilled chicken), I noticed largish letters on the bottle stating that it contains "No High Fructose Corn Syrup". I checked the ingredients and...cane sugar.

Awesome!
